So, I have now been receiving Social Security for almost a year (I will be 63 in July). I had to be VERY diligent about knowing what S.S. benefits I was entitled to. Received incorrect info from agents I talked with on the phone (not Cambridge Agents, AT FIRST!). I am divorced and wanted to collect under my ex's. Was told by several Agents (plus, the intake secretary at the main office), my ex had to be currently collecting Social Security Benefits in order for me to receive under his. NOT TRUE...he only needed to be the "eligible" age (62 years old)....Eligible...Only Means of Eligible Age! Intake secretary at the front window also told me incorrect info and at times she seemed to be snippy towards me. I really got the run-around for about 3 months. I kept VERY ACCURATE records of whom I talked with, when, what each particular person said and what records I provided. I wasn't crazy about discussing that I had 3 husbands and 3 divorces in front of a handful of people in the front office. I stood at the window while the intake secretary (who is pretty good about giving false info and tries to be intimidating). She was saying I didn't provide "so-and-so" divorce documents...when I actually had. I believe she thinks her job is to prevent me from actually talking with my Agent!! Did not report her (or my Agent who apologetically remedied my S.S. underpayments because of 2 big mistakes she made)....Since I really believed some of my requests and/or documents could, very well, have found their way into a nearby trash can!! YOU ARE PROBABLY SHOCKED ABOUT THIS!! All I'm trying to do is to help someone "out there" who may have run into trouble collecting. I, eventually received my correct benefit amount...plus, back payments due me...I BELIEVE ONLY BECAUSE I PUT UP A FIGHT. If you don't understand what is going on with your whole Social Security Benefits.....get someone to go with you and to guide you through the process!! AND KEEP VERY ACCURATE RECORDS!! ~ I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH!!
